HOW TO BRAND A LIFESTYLE: TEN LESSONS MARTHA STEWART HAS TAUGHT US

Lifestyle brands are nothing new.

Harley Davidson, Cadillac, and Rolls Royce all evolved into lifestyle brands.

What is new is that thought leaders became lifestyle brands.

People like Julia Childs, Oprah, and Louise Hay; made selling a person’s perspective profitable. Though no one has quite done it like Martha Stewart.

Love her or hate her, Martha Stewart has shown the modern entrepreneur that there can be major money in selling your philosophy and lifestyle.

From  being a model and wife to being a cook book author from Connecticut, Martha turned a small event into a modern day lifestyle empire.

And along the way she has shown us what to and not to do as well.

Do. Be you.

However you see life truly as, be you fully. Don't cut corners, edit yourself, or make your approach less because the rest of the world thinks it is is too much. If you really feel the fluffiest cakes come from fresh chicken eggs, then start building that backyard chicken coop.

Do. Keep the audience surprised.

Though the world will put you in a box, surprise them in the perfect matter of fact way. From who you hang out with or what you do for fun on the weekend, don't be limited by the box other people put on you.

Do. Grow in all directions.

This is where that crappy of advice of “choose one pony and ride it” falls completely apart. Grow in every direction possible. Make new paths and be a trailblazer.

Do. Never be limited.

You are limitless. So be you. Don't edit yourself or your actions. Don't worry what other people will think or say. Know your heart. Trust your gut. Walk your walk.

Do. Multiply yourself.

Never be scared of duplication. They can never recreate the original. Multiplying yourself only helps you grow your brand. Stand true in the fact that everyone knows who the real queen (or king) bee is.

Don't. Be infallible.

One of the greatest “flaws” in Martha’s career was her insider trading scandal. Her brand was about perfection. And though we all speculated that she had a temper, cheating was not a “good thing,” for her and her reputation.

Don't. Take yourself too seriously.

All good lifestyle brands know how to make fun of themselves. They are secure in who they are and what they are about. So a LITTLE self deprecating humor on their part is a “good thing.”

Don't. Fear competition.

When you are an industry leader and trailblazer like Martha Stewart, competition will come. You must stand firm in yourself and know that people may try to duplicate you, but no one will ever truly succeed as long as you still do you.

Don't: Shy away from media.

In the beginning, you may not get media coverage so make your own. Even if that means making the publishing house or t.v channel.

Don't: Be scared to evolve.

You are a human being. You should evolve and grow. So should your brand. Maybe you laugh at yourself more, maybe you aren't so picky about what type of eggs are used in the cake. Whatever it is, don't be afraid to evolve.  

Evolution makes you human and that is a very “good thing.”
